Venetian “ Bacaro” bars and a glass of “ ombra”
Venice’s Bacari derive from early wine merchants who set up shop in the famous Piazza S. Marco. They offered an “ombra” , a glass of wine with little appetizers. Ombra, of course, means “ shade” as they were changing location of their wares to follow the shade of the bell tower. After all, the heat of the sun would have ruined the wine! Today a small glass of local wine remains an “ombra” to drink in a “Bacaro” bar, eventually served with “ cicchetti”, food served in small portions. Now imagine being in Venice and choose your favourite ombra of San Nicolò wine:
